From Digital Access to Digital Intelligence; A Reflection by the Internet Society South Africa Chapter.

The South African Internet Governance Forum (ZAIGF) 2026 concluded this week at The Innovation Hub in Pretoria, bringing together government, industry, civil society, academia, the technical community and young South Africans to help shape the country’s digital future.

Internet Society South Africa Chapter was an official Event Partner again for ZAIGF 2026.

Coordinated by .ZADNA, with the support of the Department of Communications and Digital Technologies (DCDT) and the Internet Society South Africa Chapter, ZAIGF continues to be a national multi-stakeholder forum that brings together stakeholders from government, private sector, academia, and civil society to discuss on an equal level ICT and internet-related public policies.

This year, our Chapter ensured that conversation was seen, heard, and attended.

Behind the Scenes: Our Contribution as Event Partner

When you saw ZAIGF 2026 online, that was our team at work.

As Event Partner, the Internet Society South Africa Chapter provided end-to-end digital marketing and creative support to ensure the forum reached beyond the usual IGF community:

Digital Marketing & Communications

We managed the pre-event buzz, live coverage, and post-event narrative across social platforms: ensuring government, technical community, academia, private sector and civil society all saw themselves in ZAIGF.

What We Heard

The theme pushed us beyond access. The five tracks delivered:

1. Responsible AI: Building AI that understands South Africa’s languages, contexts and values.

2. Cybersecurity: Building trust as critical infrastructure.

3. Digital Sovereignty: Keeping data, value and decision-making local, with .ZA as a strategic national asset.

4. Meaningful Connectivity: Our core mission. Moving from signal to affordability, skills, devices, and community networks that work.

5. Digital Inclusion: Ensuring women, persons with disabilities, rural communities and youth are not left offline.

These conversations now feed into the road to the global IGF 2026 in Nairobi, themed ‘Governing the Internet in the Age of Intelligence: Our Shared Responsibility’  and South Africa’s voice is stronger because ZAIGF 2026 happened.

Thank You

To .ZADNA for the tireless coordination, to the DCDT for its leadership, to The Innovation Hub for hosting us, and to every speaker, volunteer, designer, and young person who made ZAIGF 2026 what it was.

To our Chapter members who worked nights on design files, speaker outreach, and social media schedules,  this is what an Internet Society Chapter does. We keep the Internet open, accessible, and human.

The conversations may have concluded, but the work of building South Africa’s digital future continues.

We will be sharing our official ZAIGF 2026 photo album, highlight reel, and community report-back webinar soon.

If you attended -  tag us and share your highlight. If you missed it -  join the Chapter. We have work to do.
